You made it -- the end of the internet, at least in terms of the most esoteric and needless modification for your ZD8/ZN8 Subaru BRZ or Toyota GR86. What you are looking at is a solid TITANIUM hood prop. Made in Japan by legendary exhaust makers (and metal benders) Fujitsubo, and imported directly by us.
This is a very nice part that has the top plastic part (where the prop rod engages the hood) and one rubber bumper pre-installed. You have to transfer over a single rubber bumper from the old hood prop, and that's it.
The prop rod is heat-treated to create a delicate color gradation that goes from purple at the top to natural titanium at the bottom. Fujitsubo explains that this finish is very delicate and they will NOT warranty the finish in terms of scratching, fading, further changes to the colors (which will happen as the titanium is exposed to heat) or just about any other issue related to the finish. Treat this item as a show piece if you want it to stay looking original; otherwise, if you use it daily it is going to gradually change appearance.
Installation is simple. Remove the stock prop rod by manipulating it until you can free it from the car. Install the new prop rod in the stock plastic receiver. Transfer the bottom rubber stopper part from the old prop rod to the new prop rod BEHIND where it fits into the car, to help keep the new prop rod in place.If the stock rubber stopper and/or the plastic receiver are damaged or missing, replace them with new parts.
The new prop rod has a simplified design to enable it to be manufactured in titanium. It functions mostly like the stock hood prop, and it fits in the stock location when stowed. The one difference in terms of use is that it cannot be fit to the second higher-angle hood position, since the new design will not allow the prop rod to rotate to that position. Note too that at least on our shop car the stock hood latch will slightly graze the hood prop when it is in the stowed position, and it might abrade the finish slightly at that point.
Yes, this part IS lighter than stock -- 42% lighter! -- at 0.22 kg/7.76 oz compared to 0.38 kg/13.4 oz for the stock steel item.
